Scientific-Research Center of Georgian Folklore

14 Июля 2021

The Scientific Research Center for Georgian Folklore founded in 2010 is successfully operating at the St. Andrew the First-Called Georgian University of the Georgian Patriarchate for over the decade. The aim of the center is to highlight, research, and popularize the issues of Georgian oral traditions that have not been adequately studied despite their centuries-old history. It seeks to emphasize the artistic features or belief systems from the immense ‘treasure’ of intangible cultural heritage, which are essential for developing a unified picture of the philosophy of the Georgian people.

Objectives of the Center

  • To search for, record, classify by thematic and genre, and study previously unknown examples of folk oral traditions in Georgia and beyond (e.g., in Samtskhe-Javakheti, Imerekhvi, Fereydan...).
  • To create a database using the collected materials;
  • To determine the place and function of Georgian oral traditions in the context of integration and globalization processes;
  • To prepare an encyclopedic dictionary of Georgian folklore;
  • To introduce the artistic and cognitive value of national oral traditions to foreign specialists and interested parties.
