St. Andrew the First-Called Georgian University aims to make this website usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. This page sets out honestly what works and what does not yet.
Compliance status
This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. "Partially" means the site structure and navigation meet the requirements, but the shortcomings listed below remain, mostly in older migrated content.
What works
- Full keyboard navigation with a visible focus indicator.
- A "skip to content" link as the first focusable element on every page.
- The page language is declared in the markup (lang) on both language versions.
- Semantic structure: one H1 per page, an ordered heading hierarchy, and landmarks (main, header, nav).
- Text size, contrast and motion preferences (bottom-right of the screen).
Non-accessible content
We are aware of the following shortcomings:
- Alternative text for images. Of the 529 images embedded in articles, 349 (66%) have no meaningful description — the legacy editor set an empty alt attribute. Screen readers skip these images. WCAG 1.1.1 (level A).
- Missing images in older news. In 227 articles from 2018–2021 the images no longer load: they lived on the previous server and were lost in the migration. The text remains fully available.
- PDF documents. Some of the 774 PDFs on the site are scanned images without a text layer, so screen readers cannot read them. Alternative formats are available on request (see below). WCAG 1.4.5.
- Formatting in legacy content. Migrated articles sometimes use tables for layout rather than data, and their heading levels are not always in order.
About the accessibility panel
The site offers a panel for adjusting text size, contrast, link highlighting and motion. It is a convenience: it does not by itself create conformance with any standard, and it is no substitute for fixing the underlying markup. Our approach is to correct the site itself rather than mask the barriers.

- Adding alternative text, starting with admissions, programmes and student services pages.
- Publishing new documents with a text layer, and replacing scanned PDFs over time.
- Guidance for editors so every image gets a description.
